Intentional

Having visited Lee Abbey for a holiday on a number of occasions now, I have become aware of the appeal of an intentional community. Becoming the body of Christ, each member valued, is purposeful.

How though can being a body be achieved when people are gathered to communities that are so apart? People rarely engage with one another and certainly, in the church I am part of, small communities are secondary to the vision of the whole church and a main meeting.

This suits a lot of people and they are very blessed by it. They are able to be effective in their settings and carry an energy that certainly appears to be fulfilling. Church communities are formed around ministries, such as leadership, worship, social enterprise or youth. The momentum is through the task or sometimes a particular type of meeting. But this is not what I want.

Grafted

M Emlyn Humphries's avatarM Emlyn Humphries

When a branch is to be grafted in to the stump of a vine, the vine is cut back to a stump and left to bleed. After a number of days an incision is made into the stump and a fresh branch grafted in and bound. The graft takes its life from then on from the stump and in time the graft becomes part of the vine.
This is the illustration from nature that Jesus took to inform our imaginations of what being in him means. Being in Christ is a Christian’s idenity and through Jesus’ death and resurection we are in spirit and truth joined to the people of God. Being grafted in we draw our life from Christ and inherit his everflowing nature; one with the Son yet fully us. The promised flowing of life is God the Spirit.
There is an even deeper truth. It is God…

Thoughts on God and People

This morning we considered that the Bible was written by different types of people; Priests, Prophets, Poets, Sages & Storytellers. And that each type emphasised different aspects of God’s relationship with us and our relationship with Him.

Because of these different origins it is sometimes supposed that there are contradictions in the Bible’s description of God. Or that the Bible represents an evolution of thought regarding God as time and circumstances changed through Israel’s history.

However, some believe that the Church occupies a space not a position. There is room for difference and room for movement.

As we are Pilgrims on a Journey, we encounter different aspects of God’s love toward us at different times according to our need, and consequently, how we feel and think about God changes in response to His Great Love.

This is one of the reasons that contemplation, meditation & prayer are so important. Although we “Live in the Moment”, we also need to step back and see the “Big Picture”. We need to think about what God has done for us, and what our response should be, towards Him and towards other people too.

Thoughts on our Heritage

I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing Genesis chapter 12 verse 2

God is here talking to Abraham. He had already left his native city of Ur (in modern Iraq) and had travelled to Haran (in modern Turkey) with his father and extended family. God then directed Abram (as he was then known) to leave his family and home and travel to a distant land. As Abram travelled, God’s plan was gradually revealed to him and he began to experience the blessings he had been promised.

God had made similar promises to Adam and to Noah. He would bless them and in return they were to live as he directed. These arrangements were known as covenants and were meant to be binding agreements between God and man. However, with Abraham the notion of sharing what God has given was made a part of the bargain. More than this, it was the purpose of the covenant.

Jesus said “Give and it will be given to you”. He expects that we should be a channel through which blessings flow rather than a reservoir of treasures stored up for a rainy day. God gave us his best (Jesus, his son) as an example for us to follow. Jesus gave everything that we might believe on him and come to know God.

At this time of year we especially remember those who gave their all for our freedom. Will you give a little time to consider these things, to ask God how to be blessed in order to be a blessing?

Creation and our responsibility

These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens … the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. … The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. Genesis 2

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, … what is man that you are mindful of him? Psalm 8

And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here” … and He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. Mark 3

This Morning we looked at the creation of man and how we can be thought of as image-bearers of God and what that means to us today. We are told that Jesus went about doing good & healing the sick, whereas his contemporaries were often judgemental. Who do we resemble? Perhaps we should focus on looking after each other and our wonderful planet.
